About the Handbooks

The Office of Adult Education developed the Essential Knowledge Handbooks to ensure that all adult educators in the state are working from the same knowledge base. The information contained in the handbooks represents the core knowledge that every adult educator needs to know, regardless of differences that exist among local programs. The handbooks are certainly not intended to include everything that an adult educator needs to know, but they include the basic operating knowledge that is essential for successful performance in a publicly-funded adult education program.

There are two handbooks:

  • Essential Knowledge for Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary Education: A Handbook for Instructors provides the basic information needed to teach in programs focused on basic literacy through secondary education.

  • Essential Knowledge for Adult English as a Second Language Education: A Handbook for Instructors provides the basic information needed to teach in ESL programs.
